On August 24, families of first-year students experienced a whirlwind of emotions as they moved into the residence halls. Parents beamed with pride as they helped the students officially move in and become part of the ֱ community. A few hours later, those parents were wiping tears from their faces at the realization of driving home without their child.

The mixture of excitement and anticipation was tangible. And more than a few parents were spotted scratching their heads while putting together desk lamps and furniture. Thanks to Residence Life there was also dancing —lots of music and dancing outside the first-year residence halls. The wide-ranging emotions are a right of passage.

Early Wednesday morning, President Miciak greeted the very first family moving into the newly renovated Dolan Residence Hall —home to first-year students. Mary Ciaccio ‘26 and her parents came in from Rochester, New York, the night before. Mary is the youngest of her five siblings, so her parents are nearly professionals when it comes to moving kids into college.

Mary’s mother, Regina, was impressed with the assistance provided by move-in crews. “This process has been great, one of the smoothest and most pleasant move-in experiences we’ve had,” she recalled.

Mary says she plans to major in biology and is looking forward to meeting her teammates on JCU’s softball team. She says she considered Penn State and the University of Connecticut before visiting ֱ. Once she visited JCU’s campus, her decision was made, and her college search was over.

Anna’s sister Catherine graduated in 2022 and now works in human resources in Rochester, New York.

The excitement of the fall semester is not limited to first-year students. Tim Jerme ‘24 serves as a resident advisor {RA} in Dolan Residence Hall. He says the energy of move-in day helps set the tone for streak week and the semester. He’s also looking forward to assisting first-year students in finding a sense of belonging on campus.

We have leadership, honors, and Arrupe scholars on our floor; this is a great way to bring the Dolan Hall community together.
