What is encryption? Why do I need it?

Encryption is a technique that makes data technically inaccessible to those without valid permissions. University policy requires that all computers and devices used by the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ employees for university business be encrypted.

Encrypting your laptop and desktop computers and mobile devices is the single most important step you can take to protect your personal information, and ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥'s data, in the event that the device is lost or stolen.

As part of the continued data security protection effort:

  • Information Technology Services implemented full-disk encryption on all JCU laptops used by the JCU employees.
  • All E-Mail containing sensitive data must be encrypted. This means that it must be sent from the university e-mail account as well as use Gmail's confidential mode to help protect sensitive information from unauthorized access. Click here to learn more:
  • All personally-owned computers used to conduct University business must be encrypted and verified by the Service Desk staff member. Please contact the ITS Service Desk at 216-397-3005 or email at servicedesk@jcu.edu for more information.
